The RCL International Running Conference 2019, put together & hosted by creator of Runchatlive Podcast Matt Phillips, brought together for the first time TEN internationally acclaimed experts from the world of Running Injury & Performance.

Over the course of two days, health care professionals from across the spectrum together with strength & conditioning coaches, personal trainers & runners had the opportunity to not only watch the speakers’ presentations but also partake in two 90 minute 'Question Time' sessions with all ten speakers on stage.

Needless to say, the event was a huge success, with tickets for the 2020 conference currently on sale at RCL2020.eventbrite.co.uk.

Jack Chew
Jack Chew

Founder of ‘The Physio Matters Podcast’ and the force behind 'The Big R's Conference: Reasoning, Responsibility and Reform in MSK Practice’ opens up Day 1 of the RCL International Running Conference 2019 with his presentation "EBP in Running: How Excuses of all Flavours Creep into your Practice".

There was only ever going to be one opening speaker for this conference, and Jack Chew did the job impeccably. In his own unimitable style, Jack set the scene for the rest of the day and indeed the whole conference.

Ian Griffiths
Ian Griffiths

Ian Griffiths is a Sports Podiatrist & Director of Sports Podiatry Info Ltd. As a private practitioner, independent researcher and co-host of PodChatLive, Ian is an internationally respected source of knowledge for the treatment of sports related/bio-mechanical foot & lower leg dysfunction.

As Matt's ‘go-to man’ for podiatry referral (living within a 100 mile radius - thanks for clarifying Simon Bartold!) Ian's presentation "Foot Orthoses: Straight Talking" fuelled many of the questions in the Day 1 Q&A session later that afternoon.

JF Esculier
JF Esculier

Jean-Francois (JF) Esculier graduated as a physiotherapist in 2009 and has been combining clinical and research work ever since. He is Vice President & Director of Research & Development at The Running Clinic Vancouver, a company founded by Blaise Dubois (former consultant for Athletics Canada) that has become a leading international source of information in the prevention of running injury.

As he took to the stage on Day 1, JF was the first of our speakers to put the 'international' into RCL International Running Conference , and his talk was very much enjoyed by therapists and runners alike.

Paul Westwood
Paul Westwood

Paul Westwood is a Physiotherapist, Endurance Athlete & Coach. He has over 20 years experience competing & working with elite level triathletes in New Zealand, Germany, with the Danish National Team and Joel Filliol’s Olympic Team as Physiotherapist/ Assistant Coach. Paul curently works in particular with the military.

As mentioned in Matt's introduction, Paul was one of 'the two Pauls' in Session 12 of The Physio Matters Podcast back in 2014, entitled ' The Kinesiology tape debate: To KT or not to KT'. If you haven't heard this episode of TPMP yet then we heavily recommend it. A cracking debate between Paul Westwood and Paul Coker (Rocktape UK’s medical director) who we are delighted to say is a Speaker on Day 2 of this conference!

Izzy Moore
Izzy Moore

Dr Izzy Moore is a researcher and lecturer in Sport & Exercise Medicine with PhD thesis ‘Running self-optimisation: Acute & short-term adaptations to running mechanics & running economy’. She is currently researching several injury epidemiology projects & advising National Governing Bodies on injury prevention & management strategies.

It was an absolute honour to have a researcher of Dr Moore's calibre speak at the conference, especially as she does not tend to present very often. You can see and listen to Dr Moore on Runchatlive Podcast Ep.33 in which she gives some fascinating insight into the role of research in evidence based practice., including topics such as how accessible research is to therapists, how to distinguish quality research from poor, and what terms like p-values, effect sizes and blinding actually mean!

Paul Coker
Paul Coker

Paul Coker is a Physiotherapist and Medical Director of RocktapeUK. He qualified as a physiotherapist in 2001 from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, going on to later receive a Master’s degree in Manual Therapy 2006 from UWA Western Australia. A keen off road ultra runner, Paul also prides himself on being an enthusiastic but ‘very average’ surfer.

Paul was one of 'the two Pauls' in Session 12 of The Physio Matters Podcast back in 2014, entitled 'The Kinesiology tape debate: To KT or not to KT If you haven't heard this episode of TPMP yet then we heavily recommend it. A cracking debate between THIS Paul and Paul Westwood in Westwood's Day 1 talk Encapsulating the BPS Approach into Elite/Pro Endurance Sport.

Derek Griffin
Derek Griffin

Dr. Derek Griffin is a Physiotherapist with a PhD in chronic musculoskeletal pain. Graduating from the University of Limerick, he has evolved to become a specialist in the management of patients with complex chronic pain disorders.

He is also a highly respected runner with a 2hr 31 finish at this year's London Marathon. When it comes to understanding runners in pain, they don't come much more experienced than this speaker, and his presentation at this year's RCL Running Conference certainly lived up to the expectation.

Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson is a Physical Therapist, Triathlon Coach & Competitor based in Seattle, USA. Owner of Zeren PT & Performance, he is also a multiple time Kona qualifier and known by many for his unique style of video presentation of exercises for runners.

His Facebook group 'The Runners Zone' brings together therapists & coaches from around the world and shares some incredible information regarding everything to do with looking after a runner/triathlete. We definitely recommend you check it out.

Mike James
Mike James

Mike James a.k.a. 'The Endurance Physio' is a Physiotherapist, Sports Therapist and Endurance Athlete with over 20 years’ experience as an ultra endurance athlete & clinician. As well as having an MSc in Physiotherapy & degrees in Sports Rehabilitation and Sports Science, he is also a former Royal Air Force Physical Training Instructor.

Taking the stage after nine other exceptional speakers, Mike James did an exceptional job of being the final presenter on Day 2, leaving just the afternoon Q&A session to complete this year's conference. As anyone would expect, Mike did a grand job delivering an absolutely tremendous talk on Strength Training for Runners. Keep watching after Mikes departure for a shout out to two other important characters!
